How FIFA World Cup 2026 Works - The 2026 FIFA World features 48 teams. It is being hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and includes 104 matches from June 11 through July 19, 2026.

Step 1: Group Stage 48 teams are divided into 12 groups (A–L). Each group contains 4 teams. Every team plays 3 matches (one against each team in its group).
Points: Win = 3 points / Draw = 1 point / Loss = 0 points
For instance - pairing in Group D include:
  • Paraguay
  • Australia
  • Turkiye
  • USA

Step 2: After the group stage: top two teams from each group advance
  • 12 groups × 2 teams = 24 teams
  • 8 Best third-place teams also advance.
  • 24 + 8 = 32 teams
These 32 teams move into the knockout bracket.

Step 3: The eight best third-place teams are selected using:
  • Points
  • Goal difference
  • Goals scored
  • Fair play record
  • Additional FIFA tie-breakers if needed
This means a team can finish third in its group and still reach the knockout rounds.

Step 4:
Knockout StageDuring Third-Place Match, the tournament becomes single elimination:
  • Round of 32
  • Round of 16
  • Quarterfinals
  • Semifinals
  • Final
Lose once, and you're out.

Step 5: World Cup Final - A team that wins the World Cup will play: 3 Group Stage matches, Round of 32, Round of 16, Quarterfinal, Semifinal, and Final – For a total of 8 matches (one more than in previous World Cups).
