After upgrading my kitchen with new Whirlpool appliances (refrigerator, electric range, over-the-range microwave oven, and dishwasher), I called Whirlpool to register them. In this blog, I share some shocking findings after purchasing Appliance Care Protection Plans and describe documents I received.
Many consumers mistakenly believe that registering an appliance is required to activate the manufacturer's warranty. According to Whirlpool, that is generally not the case. Warranty coverage begins with proof of purchase.

If an appliance cannot be repaired economically, the service plan may replace the appliance when repair costs exceed its value. This is probably the most attractive feature of the plan.
Expect introductory/ promotional pricing after registering your Whirlpool appliances. They offered me...
For four appliances, the introductory cost was less than $13 per month.
The low introductory price makes the offer very tempting, especially when purchasing multiple appliances at once.
Like many consumers, the promotional pricing hooked me and I purchased plans based on what the customer service representative told me. When I ask for documents to review before giving my credit card number. I was told that all documents will be emailed with a secure link to setup my account and that everything can be fully reviewed in the contract when payment is received.
I became suspecious but went ahead and purchased the plans. He assured me that I could cancel anytime if I didn't like the plans and would be given a full refund after reviewing the plan for 30 days - during the "Free Look Period."
After reading documents in the plan, I discovered several important limitations...
During the Whirlpool factory warranty period, warranty-covered mechanical and electrical failures are generally handled through Whirlpool's warranty process.
The plan is not a substitute for the manufacturer's warranty.
These exclusions were not mentioned during the sales presentation and were discovered after reviewing the written contract.
Each appliance has its own individual protection plan and documentation.
I strongly recommend that consumers review every document in the portal before deciding whether to keep the plan.
The actual contract contains approximately five pages explaining coverage, benefits, limitations, and exclusions, plus several additional pages containing state-specific provisions.
After reviewing the contract, I decided the plan was not a good fit for my situation.
My reasons included:
I felt there were too many exclusions, and that the plan did not provide the level of protection I originally believed I was purchasing.
In my opinion, if new appliances require extensive protection after purchase, it raises questions about long-term reliability.
I later learned there were additional promotional pricing options tied to automatic checking account withdrawals that were not disclosed to me during the sales presentation - such as....
My contract contained an incorrect address.
Customer service attempted to correct the information on two separate occasions, but the incorrect information continued to reappear in the system.
For me, this created concerns about future service claims and documentation accuracy.
As a handyman, I feel comfortable maintaining and repairing many appliance issues once the manufacturer's warranty expires.
I also spend time reading manuals and watching repair and maintenance videos to avoid accidental damage.
There are two questions that may help you decide on the value of these plans: 1) Do I occassional damage things due to accidents or not reading instructions? 2) Do I rely on professional service technicians to diagnose and repair my appliances?
The good news is that cancellation was easy.
I canceled during the review period before the 30-day cancellation window expired.
Customer service processed the cancellation without any pressure or difficulty.
I was told that a full refund would be issued and that it could take approximately 7 to 14 business days for the refund to appear. It only took 2 days.
The representative also encouraged me to return in the future if I wanted protection after the manufacturer's warranty expires.
Do not leave appliances boxed for days or weeks.
If damage is discovered, reporting it quickly can help avoid disputes between the retailer, manufacturer, and delivery company. Most retail appliance stores will provide a replacement up to 48 hours of purchase.
For me personally, the factory warranty provides sufficient protection during the first year, so I chose to cancel my plans.

Track the International Space Station (ISS) When It Flies Over Your Home...
Spot The Station - Get the free app by NASA - Johnson Space Center to predict the approximate time and location the International Space Station will fly over your home. NASA has compiled a massive list of sighting opportunities worldwide that allows you to search by your specific city when ISS will be visible for you to see with your eye.
Did you know that the ISS travels at a speed of 17,150 miles per hour - while orbiting 250 miles above the Earth? Because of this, it is only visible for a few minutes, and circles the Earth once every 92 minutes. The best viewing times are at dust and dawn.
1. Go to: https://www.nasa.gov/spot-the-station/ and enter your Country, State, and City (Example: United States - Arkansas - Little Rock). The site will tell you the exact timing and direction for tonight’s pass. Notice the sighting dates and times ISS is visible.
2. Look for both the direction and elevation it appears above the horizon, and track it until it reaches maximum height (shown in degrees). At this point, ISS disappears above the horizon. If this sighting is viewed at a low angle (say 10 degrees), you should position yourself at a higher point in in your city - away from trees or mountains where you can see the horizon.
3. To determine if you have an adaquate viewing angle, extend your arm outward with a fist facing North of the horizon, the top of your fist will be about 10 degrees. If there is anything blocking your view, move to a higher elevation to view ISS.
