My Experience with Whirlpool's Appliance Protection Plans
After upgrading my kitchen with new Whirlpool appliances (refrigerator, electric range, over-the-range microwave oven, and dishwasher), I called Whirlpool to register them. In this blog, I share some shocking findings after purchasing Appliance Care Protection Plans and describe documents I received.
Do I Need to Register My Whirlpool Appliances?
Many consumers mistakenly believe that registering an appliance is required to activate the manufacturer's warranty. According to Whirlpool, that is generally not the case. Warranty coverage begins with proof of purchase.
Registering your appliances can be beneficial because it helps Whirlpool:
- Notify you about product recalls.
- Contact you regarding important product updates.
- Verify ownership information if service is needed.
- Maintain a record of your appliance model and serial numbers..
Do You Need Additional Protection for Your New Appliances Already Covered by the Manufacturer's Warranty?
For brand-new appliances already covered by Whirlpool's warranty, I found that protection plans offer two significant benefits...
1. Accidental Damage Protection
The plan covers accidental damage that is not covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
Examples might include:
- Accidental impact damage.
- User mishaps.
- Certain accidental events that affect operation.
According to plan documents, there are no separate charges for covered service calls, labor, or replacement parts.
2. Replacement Coverage
If an appliance cannot be repaired economically, the service plan may replace the appliance when repair costs exceed its value. This is probably the most attractive feature of the plan.
How Much Does Protection Plans Cost?
Expect introductory/ promotional pricing after registering your Whirlpool appliances. They offered me...
- Approximately 50% off for the first two months when using a credit or debit card.
For four appliances, the introductory cost was less than $13 per month.
The low introductory price makes the offer very tempting, especially when purchasing multiple appliances at once.
What I Wish I Had Known Before Enrolling...
Like many consumers, the promotional pricing hooked me and I purchased plans based on what the customer service representative told me. When I ask for documents to review before giving my credit card number. I was told that all documents will be emailed with a secure link to setup my account and that everything can be fully reviewed in the contract when payment is received.
I became suspecious but went ahead and purchased the plans. He assured me that I could cancel anytime if I didn't like the plans and would be given a full refund after reviewing the plan for 30 days - during the "Free Look Period."
After reading documents in the plan, I discovered several important limitations...
1. The Plan Does Not Replace the Manufacturer's Warranty
During the Whirlpool factory warranty period, warranty-covered mechanical and electrical failures are generally handled through Whirlpool's warranty process.
The plan is not a substitute for the manufacturer's warranty.
2. The Contract Contains a Number of Important Exclusions...
- Lightning strikes.
- Electrical surges.
- Floods and certain natural disasters.
- Product recalls.
- Cosmetic damage.
- Theft.
- Pest or animal damage.
- Pre-existing conditions.
- Several additional exclusions listed in the contract.
These exclusions were not mentioned during the sales presentation and were discovered after reviewing the written contract.
After payment, you will setup your account. You will have access to a secure online portal or dashboard that includes:
- Payment information.
- Service request links.
- Contract documents.
- Product registration information.
- Appliance model and serial numbers.
- Coverage details.
- Monthly pricing.
- Cancellation options.
Each appliance has its own individual protection plan and documentation.
I strongly recommend that consumers review every document in the portal before deciding whether to keep the plan.
Read the Entire Contract
The actual contract contains approximately five pages explaining coverage, benefits, limitations, and exclusions, plus several additional pages containing state-specific provisions.
Why I Chose to Cancel
After reviewing the contract, I decided the plan was not a good fit for my situation.
My reasons included:
1. Too Many Exclusions
I felt there were too many exclusions, and that the plan did not provide the level of protection I originally believed I was purchasing.
2. New Appliances Should Not Need Constant Protection
In my opinion, if new appliances require extensive protection after purchase, it raises questions about long-term reliability.
3. Incomplete Disclosure of Discounts
I later learned there were additional promotional pricing options tied to automatic checking account withdrawals that were not disclosed to me during the sales presentation - such as....
- Approximately 50% off for six months when using automatic checking account drafts.
4. Address Errors
My contract contained an incorrect address.
Customer service attempted to correct the information on two separate occasions, but the incorrect information continued to reappear in the system.
For me, this created concerns about future service claims and documentation accuracy.
5. I Am Comfortable Making My Own Repairs
As a handyman, I feel comfortable maintaining and repairing many appliance issues once the manufacturer's warranty expires.
I also spend time reading manuals and watching repair and maintenance videos to avoid accidental damage.
There are two questions that may help you decide on the value of these plans: 1) Do I occassional damage things due to accidents or not reading instructions? 2) Do I rely on professional service technicians to diagnose and repair my appliances?
Cancellation Experience
The good news is that cancellation was easy.
I canceled during the review period before the 30-day cancellation window expired.
Customer service processed the cancellation without any pressure or difficulty.
I was told that a full refund would be issued and that it could take approximately 7 to 14 business days for the refund to appear. It only took 2 days.
The representative also encouraged me to return in the future if I wanted protection after the manufacturer's warranty expires.
Important Consumer Tip: Inspect new appliances immediately after delivery.
Do not leave appliances boxed for days or weeks.
If damage is discovered, reporting it quickly can help avoid disputes between the retailer, manufacturer, and delivery company. Most retail appliance stores will provide a replacement up to 48 hours of purchase.
Final Thoughts
For me personally, the factory warranty provides sufficient protection during the first year, so I chose to cancel my plans.
Plans may be particularly attractive for homeowners who:
- Frequently experience accidental damage.
- Prefer not to troubleshoot appliance issues themselves.
- Want protection against costly out-of-warranty repairs.
- Value replacement coverage for major appliances.
As always, every consumer should carefully evaluate the costs, benefits, exclusions, and their own repair abilities before deciding whether an appliance protection plan is worth the expense.
